Book Description:

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is a groundbreaking war novel that offers a raw and psychological portrait of courage, fear, and self-discovery. Set during the American Civil War, the novel follows Henry Fleming, a young Union soldier who dreams of heroism but finds himself overwhelmed by fear when he faces his first battle.

Haunted by guilt after fleeing combat, Henry wrestles with shame and questions the nature of bravery. As he returns to the front and confronts the horrors of war, he undergoes a profound inner transformation — earning, in his mind, a "red badge" of courage through his actions and emotional reckoning.

Renowned for its vivid imagery, realism, and impressionistic style, The Red Badge of Courage was revolutionary for its time. It remains a powerful exploration of the psychological effects of war and a cornerstone of American literature.
