Book Description:

Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty (1877) is a moving tale told from the perspective of a horse, chronicling his life from a carefree colt on an English farm to the hardships of pulling cabs in Victorian London. Through the eyes of Black Beauty, readers witness the kindness and cruelty of the humans he encounters, from gentle caretakers to harsh masters.

Far more than a simple animal story, Black Beauty is a powerful plea for compassion, empathy, and humane treatment of animals. Sewell’s vivid storytelling and moral clarity helped transform public attitudes toward horses and inspired animal welfare reforms.

Both heartbreaking and hopeful, Black Beauty remains a classic of children’s literature and social advocacy — a timeless testament to dignity, endurance, and kindness.

About Anna Sewell:

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was an English novelist whose only published work, Black Beauty, became one of the best-selling books of all time. A lifelong advocate for the humane treatment of animals, Sewell wrote the novel during the final years of her life, intending it as a moral guide rather than a children’s story. Though she died shortly after its publication, her legacy lives on in the novel’s enduring influence on literature and animal rights.
