Book Description:

María by Jorge Isaacs is a landmark of 19th-century Latin American Romanticism and one of Colombia’s most cherished literary classics. Set in the lush Cauca Valley, the novel tells the tragic love story of Efraín, a young man returning home from school in Bogotá, and María, his sweet and fragile cousin. Their deep affection blossoms amid the beauty of rural life, but fate — in the form of illness and social obligation — threatens to tear them apart.

Through poetic descriptions of the landscape and heartfelt emotional intensity, Isaacs crafts a story filled with longing, innocence, and sorrow. María is not only a tale of doomed romance but also a nostalgic portrait of a fading way of life, touched by the social and racial hierarchies of 19th-century Colombia.

Rich in sentiment and natural imagery, María remains a cornerstone of Latin American literature — a moving testament to love, memory, and the emotional power of place.

About Jorge Isaacs:

Jorge Isaacs (1837–1895) was a Colombian writer, poet, and politician best known for his only novel, María. Born in Cali to a Jewish-English father and a Colombian mother, Isaacs led a varied life as a soldier, educator, and public servant. Though his literary output was limited, María secured his place in literary history for its lyrical prose and emotional depth. The novel’s autobiographical elements and Romantic style resonated deeply with readers, and Isaacs is celebrated today as one of the founding figures of Colombian literature.
