Charlotte Perkins Gilman Collected editions

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860 – 1935) was an American writer, lecturer, and social reformer whose work championed women’s economic independence and mental health. Her short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a seminal feminist text, exposing the psychological toll of the era’s oppressive gender roles.

Beyond fiction, Gilman wrote influential essays and books — including Women and Economics — advocating for social structures that would allow women to thrive as equals. Her lectures and activism made her a prominent figure in the early feminist movement.

Through her writing and advocacy, Charlotte Perkins Gilman left a lasting legacy in both literature and social reform.
