Book Description:

In Desert and Wilderness is a classic adventure novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Henryk Sienkiewicz. Set during the Mahdist War in 19th-century Sudan, the story follows two European children — Staś Tarkowski, a brave Polish boy, and Nel Rawlison, an English girl — who are kidnapped by rebels and must survive a perilous journey across the deserts and jungles of Africa.

Relying on their courage, wit, and resilience, Staś and Nel confront wild animals, harsh climates, and human danger, forging a deep bond along the way. Filled with vivid descriptions, suspense, and a strong moral compass, the novel offers a thrilling tale of endurance and friendship.

First published in 1911, In Desert and Wilderness remains a beloved work of historical adventure, especially popular in Poland, and continues to introduce young readers to themes of bravery, loyalty, and cross-cultural understanding.
