H. Rider Haggard

H. Rider Haggard Collected editions

H. Rider Haggard (1856 – 1925) was an English novelist whose tales of exploration and lost civilizations helped define the adventure genre. His breakout novel, King Solomon’s Mines, introduced the heroic Allan Quatermain and captivated Victorian readers with its mix of high stakes, exotic settings, and archaeological intrigue.

Haggard drew on his experiences in southern Africa, infusing his fiction with a sense of authenticity while often reflecting the colonial attitudes of his time. His works, including She and Allan Quatermain, blended romance, mystery, and action into fast-paced narratives.

Today, H. Rider Haggard is remembered as one of the fathers of the “lost world” adventure novel, his influence evident in literature, film, and popular culture well into the modern era.
