Stephen Crane (1871 – 1900) was an American novelist and journalist whose Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage broke new ground in its portrayal of combat and psychological realism. Following young soldier Henry Fleming, the novel explores fear, courage, and the complexities of heroism.

Crane’s concise, impressionistic style influenced generations of writers in both fiction and journalism.
