Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda Collected editions

Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda (1814 – 1873) was a Cuban-born novelist and poet whose abolitionist novel Sab predates Uncle Tom’s Cabin and is considered one of the first anti-slavery novels in the Americas. The story follows a mixed-race enslaved man whose love for a white woman is doomed by racial and social barriers.

Avellaneda’s passionate critique of slavery and patriarchy made her a bold voice in both literature and social reform.

Through Sab, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda challenged the injustices of her time with courage and lyrical power.
