W. Winwood Reade Collected editions

W. Winwood Reade (1838 – 1875) was a British explorer, historian, and writer of Anglo-African descent whose The African Sketch-Book (1869) combined travel narrative, ethnography, and political commentary. Drawing from his journeys through West and Central Africa, Reade offered vivid descriptions of landscapes, peoples, and cultures.

While reflecting the colonial attitudes of his era, Reade’s work also provided valuable firsthand observations that have historical significance today.

Through The African Sketch-Book, W. Winwood Reade documented a rapidly changing Africa in the 19th century.
