Olaudah Equiano

Olaudah Equiano Collected editions

Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745 – 1797) was an African writer, abolitionist, and former enslaved man whose autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, became a powerful argument against the transatlantic slave trade. Born in what is now Nigeria, Equiano was kidnapped as a child and sold into slavery, enduring years of forced labor before purchasing his freedom.

His narrative offers an unflinching account of the horrors of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit, blending personal testimony with broader social critique.

Through his eloquence and courage, Olaudah Equiano became a central figure in the abolitionist movement and an enduring voice for human rights.
