Sarmiento (1811 – 1888) was an Argentine statesman, educator, and writer whose Facundo: Civilization and Barbarism is both a political manifesto and a foundational text of Argentine literature. Using the life of the gaucho leader Juan Facundo Quiroga as a lens, Sarmiento contrasts European “civilization” with the rural “barbarism” he believed hindered national progress.
