Domingo F. Sarmiento

Domingo F. Sarmiento Collected editions

Domingo F. Sarmiento (1811 – 1888) was an Argentine statesman, educator, and writer whose Facundo: Civilization and Barbarism is both a political manifesto and a foundational text of Argentine literature. Using the life of the gaucho leader Juan Facundo Quiroga as a lens, Sarmiento contrasts European “civilization” with the rural “barbarism” he believed hindered national progress.

The book’s vivid descriptions of the Pampas and its cultural analysis make it an essential work in Latin American political and literary history.

Through Facundo, Domingo F. Sarmiento shaped the intellectual and political debates of his nation’s formative years.
