Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson Collected editions

Samuel Johnson (1846 – 1901) was a Nigerian historian and clergyman whose The History of the Yorubas remains one of the most important records of Yoruba history, culture, and traditions. Drawing on oral accounts and his own research, Johnson traced the origins, political structures, and spiritual practices of the Yoruba people.

Although unpublished during his lifetime, the work was eventually released in 1921, preserving invaluable knowledge at a time when colonial forces threatened indigenous histories.

Through The History of the Yorubas, Samuel Johnson safeguarded a cultural heritage that might otherwise have been lost.
